Ashram: One of the Residences of Mahatma Gandhi

We walked the same first steps in the same place that Mahatma Gandhi began the Salt March in 1930.  He started the march here at this Ashram and promised to never return until India was free from British control, and he never returned as we he was assassinated shortly after they claimed their Independence.  Dr. Gandhi's father is in this picture.  Dr. Gandhi said that Mahatma Gandhi was a very fast walker, and he took morning and evening walks.  This place is now a museum.

Ms. Dunbar and I sitting at the desk of Mahatma Gandhi.  You get to leave a message in this journal there.

This Ashram we visited was one of the residences where Gandhi lived.  Dr. Gandhi shared his personal story about how his grandfather taught him to spin, and they used to have competition in the evening.  He said that his grandfather even wrote a letter to his parents (who lived in South Africa) telling them that Arun won the competition:) The letter is stored in the museum here.

  17. If Gandhi was a fast walker why did he use a cane? Also in a lot of these photos I see yarn spinning devices that are by hand when we now have automatic devices to do this for us.
