At Barefoot College we saw incredibly innovative work in the areas of solar technology, medicine, dentistry, and education. This is a technical school that does not offer a diploma or licensing but rather valuable training that has helped many get out of the life of poverty and learn or practice a skill. A couple of people on our tour even had some acupuncture treatments. In the circuit board assembly area, we watched women from a wide variety of cultures and languages working on assembling circuit boards - skill training sponsored by their local villages and national governments with the promise of bringing electricity back to their homes. At this college, we also saw a puppet show. They use these puppet shows which is a traditional form of entertainment to help inform and teach about the issues that impact the surrounding villages. Each face on the puppets looks so realistic! What a talent!

Solar mamas building and using solar panels to cook. The panels boil water up to 300 degrees! |
They broadcast live from the college 7 hours a day and inform the villages about the different programs offered. Notice the walls are made of egg cartons. |
We talked with the head of the dentistry program here. She only finished up to 5th grade in school but is now performing most jobs of a dental hygienist after being trained. |

ReplyDeleteI like the quote "I slept and dreamt that life was joy, I woke and saw that life was service." I like it because it's talking about how we work our entire life and sometimes don't actually enjoy it and have fun
ReplyDeleteI agree with Naquan on that quote, I like it too. Sometimes you just have to have to take a break with work and enjoy whats right infront of you and go with the flow.
ReplyDeleteI think its a really great thing that the on woman didn't finish the fifth grade but was able to learn the skills of a dental hygienist.
ReplyDeleteIs college free in India, how does the college process differ from the United States?
ReplyDeleteWas the puppet show in English or in their Native Language?
ReplyDeleteWhy the college is called Barefoot college? It's so cool how many people from other countries go there to learn. How do they communicate with people that come from a different country and don't know their language?
ReplyDeleteYou said that the dentist only finished 5th grade. Is there no bare minimum education that every person should have there? For example, is high school not a requirement for them?
ReplyDeleteWhat is in that water storage?
ReplyDeleteHow did you feel being involved on these type of activities? Like on the first picture... Would you have done something similar over here in the U.S?
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing to see the dedication of the people in India. They attend a college that wont give them a degree but are determined to get out of poverty.
ReplyDeleteWas the puppets show funny. Did you enjoy the show?
ReplyDeleteThe people have really no education but know how to do what college students in America who pay for a education know. Crazy...
ReplyDeleteWhat is the method they use to to filter, boil and store water? Who created this method?
ReplyDeleteDid you and Ms. Dunbar create anything while in India?
ReplyDeleteHow long does it typically take for someone to make one piece of clothing in India? What is the most expensive fabric in India?
ReplyDeleteI see in one of the pictures you say there is a woman who only finished up to fifth grade? Was this because of the roles women had to perform or financial issues? How was she able to do dentistry if she only had a little bit of education in her background?
ReplyDeleteWhat was the greatest most valuable info/facts you learned while experiencing the college

ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how you can connect the quote on the wall to our community service over here. Did you also make that connection when you first read the quote yourself?
ReplyDeleteWas you able to try some of the machines
ReplyDeleteHow long did it took for them to make clothes or any material in their machines ?
ReplyDeleteDoes this reflect a form of outsourcing even thought they are making these objects and sterilizing water for their villages. If big companies found out that they can manufacture circuit boards. Also how does anyone afford to go to the dentist, I imagine for a poor country they have a poor health insurance with a big majority of their population uninsured.
ReplyDeletei wonder how far someone can carry all those pots and pans
ReplyDeleteI wonder how heavy those pots and pans are on her head and how far does she have to walk with them on her head?
